Hosting for your Site
You have a new website,or just an idea that you feel might be the next great site.
Unless you have your own server, in which case I doubt you would be reading this article, you will need someone to bring your idea to the world. This is the job of the hosting company. In most cases they can provide you with a small portion of a large server. For a fee , of course.
Starting with a new hosting company is a lot like getting a new rooomate. You both have certain needs that must be filled, and hope the other one will fulfill them.
Unfortunately, there is also a big difference.. THIS IS BUSINESS!
If your site is to be used for commerce,or to make you money, then it's business for both parties. Even if it's just a hobby site to you though, it's still business to the hosting provider.
So, before you begin your search for the right hosting provider, take a little time to do some research. It's beyond the scope of this article to have all the answers, but a few question that should be answered might be.....
- What size, or bandwith will your site require?
- Do you have future plans for multiple sites?
- Will you be keeping these sites, or building them to eventually sell?
- What programs will you require the host to have. Will you need a database ?
- How is their downtime record? A site thats not available is useless.
- How about Customer Service? One of the best places to get info about hosting is on the companys website. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions, whether by a phone call or email. If a company is too busy to answer your questions,or doesn't explain them to your satisfaction, it will certainly not get any better after you are a customer.
Finally, there are many excellent websites that have forums about hosting. DigitalPoint, and Sitepoint are just two places you might want to start. Again, don't be afraid to introduce yourself, and ask questions. One of the greatest things about the internet is the communities of people willing to share their experience with ''noobies''
Armed with your new knowledge, and questions, now you can begin your search. Many hosting firms have free try-out periods to allow you to see if this is a nice fit.
This is a great idea, but remember....IT TAKES TIME TO SET UP A SITE....AND TIME TO MOVE IT.....so have a good feeling about your new roomate before moving in.
We have included a few hosting companies that offer good deals on this page. Check out their sites, ask questions.
Best of luck in your search, and our hope that your internet experience will be all that you want it to be.
